Vision by Design, the annual meeting of the Orthokeratology Academy of America enjoyed its largest attendance in history with over 450 attendees. The myopia epidemic and it's control were the opening and feature presentation covering inwardly focused lens designs, pharmaceutical and multifocal lens interventions, ergonomic and binocular modifications, peer reviewed literature and unique treatment options employed in China. Other panel sessions included a review of custom orthoK designs, orthoK and OMDs, practice management, a "bootcamp" for new orthoK fitters, a scleral wet lab and innovative orthoK designs such as correction of residual astigmatism and hyperopic presbyopia.
The OAA unveiled its newest education feature - the OrthoK Mentoring program. This is an online program where doctors can upload a problem lens design and receive feedback from an experienced mentor.
Doctors wishing to attain the FIAO (Fellowship of the International Academy of Orthokeratology) came to this meeting to undergo testing. They came from the US as well as from the International Academy of Orthokeratology Asia (IAOA) China Committee. Eight doctors were able to achieve the honor at this meeting.
The OAA and the annual meeting have become known for their welcoming and encouraging attitude towards newcomers. This meeting was no exception with over half of the attendees new to the event. Email and letters of thanks have been pouring in from the new members. If you want more information about the OAA go to www.orthokacademy.com
